National Self Sufficiency All products that are required for our National Security, as well as all basic needs of the citizens of our Country should be produced in American owned plants, right here in the U.S.A., by companies headquartered on this continent (and paying taxes here). Some luxury wants could be imported by paying equalization tariffs. This is necessary to rebuild our middle class, which has been practically destroyed by the effects of “Globalization”. Democracy in the workplace should be the norm. We have always been a trading nation and always will be, but it is bad management to allow a negative balance of trade. Positive trade balances can be restored by reinstating the tax and tariff structure in place when President Eisenhower left office. That was essentially the system of rules that had produced positive trade balances for over 200 years and made us the strongest first world nation on earth with the greatest middle class of all time. Corporations who built overseas will, of course, whine the loudest. But, I remind them all that they said they were going to other countries to expand their markets…not looking for cheap labor. Well then, let them sell in those expanded markets. But, if they intend to sell in the U.S.A., they must pay the tariffs required to bring those products into our country. If this causes a problem for them, I have no problem with them learning that investment outside our country and not in our interest carries risk. I believe in America and Americans. I have no qualms about protecting an American job. We, in the Green Party, believe in the family farm, the family business, and the model that worked so well for this country up until the late 1970’s. This new model, the CORPORATE MODEL, that we have now, only works for the very wealthy. Many years of experience proves the truth of this, regardless of the statements of programmed economists one sees on T.V. Dr. Ravi Batra, of Southern Methodist University, in Texas, charts the destruction of globalization theories with hard, cold, facts in his excellent books. Ultimately, these serious problems we face, that could well bring and end to our Representative Democratic Republic, are interlinked. Corporate personhood must be eliminated as a legal concept. Then, application of laws against monopolies must be enforced. One of my heroes, Abraham Lincoln said (and I paraphrase from memory): “Sure, we can get cheaper labor overseas, but then we get the goods and they get the money. If we build it here, we get the goods and we get the money!” ©2009-2010 John Gray for U.S. Senate, all rights reserved.
